New York Toy Fair - High Res videos! (UPDATED 03/01/2015!)

Bookmark this page! I've got a couple of those "High Quality" videos posted, and will update this as I continue to make more.

Nerf Tek Strike Writeup is HERE:

And look, a genuine demo video, showing how the hit registering works. I was pretty amazed, to be honest. Yes, it's different, yes, you have to aim for the shield, but nothing is written in stone and to be able to track hits? Heck yes I'll try this out.

(HASBRO/Ages 8 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $79.99/Available: Fall 2014)
NERF battles mobilize when combined with remote-controlled COMBAT CREATURE robots! Using the handheld remote, fans can activate the all-terrain, 6-legged mobility, shoot Nerf darts up to an impressive 45 feet and use the aiming elevator and 360 degree rotation to hit their targets. Battle friends and activate rapid-fire blasting to shoot up to twelve NERF darts in a row, changing the direction of each shot to keep advancing robots at bay. 6 AA batteries required, not included. Available at most major toy retailers nationwide and on

My time with the Nerf Zombie Strike Slingfire. You might even have an idea of the range/accuracy, as I used a GoPro for part of this video.

Now, if only they had 2 of them.

I'll continue to embed videos here, so make sure to come back to this page!

Nerf Cam ECS (CS?) 12 POV Camera Footage - F2A First look

Nerf Cam ECS (CS?) 12 Footage is live!  This looks a bit better than the engadget post from a month or so ago, in that the video isn't as pixelated (seemingly) as one might expect, and the camera seems to be insulated from the flywheels whirring much better than before.

(Ages 8 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $79.99/Available: Fall 14)

Epic NERF shots live on way past the initial blast with the N-STRIKE ELITE NERF CAM ECS-12 blaster! Giving NERF fans the innovation and connectivity they crave, the NERF CAM ECS-12 blaster allows them to capture and share footage of epic battles and missions. The first NERF blaster to feature a built in camera, the NERF CAM ECS-12 blaster sends N-STRIKE ELITE darts flying up to an impressive 90 feet, records awesome NERF missions and lets NERF fans display them instantly on the playback screen or download them to share with friends for major bragging rights. New York Toy Fair 2014 Overview - Tek Recon Predator

Tek Recon was a bit of a find for me last year at Toy Fair. A year after the Kickstarter and subsequent release, what have they been up to? The Tek Recon Predator.

  • MSRP: $49.99
  • Ammo Capacity: 100 (50 rounds on each side of the magazine)
  • Range: 100'
  • Removable stock, sight(s), LED light on the front (all picatinny compatible)
  • New style magazine (Interesting note, the Havok magazine will work in the Predator, but the Predator magazine is not backwards compatible)
  • New style cradle, a lot more robust than the original. This one features a HUGE metal screw to fix the mobile device holder in place.
Old style cradle
New style cradle
The prototype fired using the pump grip (edit: there will be trigger this time, the Predator will only fire using the pump grip. The trigger shown in the picture is for the light) and it had some heft. The rubber end of the stock was great as before, so no complaints there.

As has been the case from the beginning, the folks at Tek Recon I spoke with (Harold, Steve, and Graeme) were all receptive to my critiques to the Hammer Head and Havok, and reminded me that information like that is important to their design process. As their first foray into blasters, they realize there's work to be done, and they welcome it. For the record, did you answer their request for suggestions on Facebook?

As previously reported, there aren't just new blasters but ammo types as well in the works. These will either affect rate of fire or range, so we'll just have to see. As it looks, Tech4Kids is still strongly behind Tek Recon to bring the best experience for the players. Judging from Toy Fair, their energy into the brand is on the right track, and I'm looking forward to seeing this in the Fall in its Final Form.

REVEAL: Tek Recon Predator for 2014! New Blaster! (New York Toy Fair)

Tek Recon broke out at last year's Toy Fair with it's app, new styled, reusable rubber ring NRG ammo, and promises of high capacity and high ranges mixed with video game FPS action. The Hammer Head and the Havok generated a lot of buzz via Kickstarter and E3, with some astounding community outreach there and through Facebook.

That was the past though, and now for New York Toy Fair 2014, Tek Recon brings you... the Predator. They sent out a press release around this AM, and here are some highlights!

From the press release -
"The Predator features rapid slam firing, with ranges exceeding 100 feet. It holds up to 100 ‘NRG’ rounds, more than any other reusable ammo blaster. To help enhance the Tek Recon experience, a newly designed magazine that allows for rapid loading firing will be introduced to enhance the battle experience. The Predator comes equipped with six accessories; including scopes and LED targeting technology that can be customized and mounted on tactical rails. ....In addition to the Predator blaster, new accessories for 2014 include different performance ‘NRG' rounds, like Long and Soft shots. These special rounds come in a variety of colors and provide more customization for the fans."

So there you have it. The special rounds of varying styles that showed, and a new blaster. I'm guessing I'll get a look at the new cradle too. Should make for an interesting Toy Fair and year in blasters overall. Thoughts? I got some clarification, and they're referring to this being more rounds than any other Tek Recon blaster, as the Hailfire has a max of 144 rounds.

Anyway, thoughts? How have you liked Tek Recon thus far?

REVIEW: TMNT Dojo Training Weapons

Review: TMNT Foam Dojo Training Weapons! Leonardo's Katana, Donatello's Bo Staff/spear, Raphael's Sai, Michelangelo's Nunchaku

By: Vas The Stampede

Thanks to Playmates for the samples to review, all opinions are my own

MSRP: Approx. $17.99 (what I saw on some Target listings)
Material: EVA foam
Raph's sai are the only 2 pack; all others are single

Raphael's Sai (Not entirely sure why each only has one prong, looks a bit more like a jitte.  Uh, thanks Google!
Donatello's Staff/Spear; Leonardo's Katana
Mikey's Nunchaku - Zing bow used for size comparison

I'll be honest, I'm a huge fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and it gladdens my heart to see the Turtles back in all their resplendent, pizza eating glory. When I was around for the 90s run, we didn't have the foam weapons like the above; our toy TMNT weapons were made of hard plastic. While it built character, it also wasn't particularly safe for household items or limbs.

Nowadays though, the TMNT Dojo sets are made of soft foam, on par with any Nerf N-Force weapons and I think they're a bit tougher against scuffing/gouges/odd bruises.  NOW THEY SAY ON THE TOY TO NOT STRIKE AT PEOPLE/ANIMALS/OBJECTS but things happen, and when they do your TMNT weapon should be ok taking incidental contact. Don't actually go fighting ninjas with these.  Zombies maybe, but that depends on who is calling the shots. :)

Little touches like bandages, chips in the blade to show battle-damage, add to the look of the toy.  And, hey, branding.
One thing I really like about the weapons are the little details and definitely cartoony nature of their look.  I would have liked to see Donatello's staff a little longer to differentiate itself from Leonardo's Katana, but hey, it's built for a kid.  Raphael's sai handles are a good size for even adult hands, and I had no trouble whipping Michelangelo's Nunchaku around like a proud amateur who watched the original movie plenty of times.  Fellow 'chucker, indeed (for the record I'm 5'7")

Again, these weapons are constructed from a soft foam, but that's no reason to start wailing away on anyone with these. Pretend you're a ninja sure, but leave the vigilante justice to the pros.

While in the store, I did test out Donatello's staff with the Deluxe Turtle Shell; it held in the holster quite nicely and was a good fit. I did have some difficulty getting it back out and I'm not sure the other weapons would holster as nicely. Also, while I said the foam is durable I think the plastic from the latch in the Deluxe Shell would wear away the handle on the Dojo sets. The plastic versions would probably be a wiser decision to pair with the Deluxe Shell for the mutant on the go.

The weapons might be considered expensive, at almost $20 you're looking at a bit of an investment to recreate your favorite Ninja Teens but you are getting a quality toy roleplay product. I wouldn't take these to a LARP but to raid the Technodrome or infiltrate the Kraang, you're in good shape. The decision to change the shape of Raphael's sai was an odd one for me, but maybe that was in the ability to package 2 together, unlike that Wolverine claw nonsense which was ONE PER PACKAGE.

Overall though, I really like these and for your up and coming Ninja Turtle fan these are good for costuming and playing pretend. If you are in that older market, You may get a good kick of nostalgia or jealousy because you wish you had these when you were bruising yourself and your friends with this. Questions? Comments? Let me know!
